Location : 106 Commercial Street, Spitalfields, London, E1 6LZ
Duration : 4 Weeks
The goal of this project was to archive and research for the given site, which was used to be a horse stable. The site has the historical context of East London in early 1900 and has lots of unusual characteristics.
Commercial Street is an arterial road in Tower Hamlets, east London that runs north to south from Shoreditch High Street to Whitechapel High Street through the East End district of Spitalfields. This stunning former 19th-century stable building sits opposite the Old Spitalfields Market and is centred around a triple-height atrium. This building has exposed brickworks and many original features including timber beams and beautiful arch entrance.

The foyer has both indoor and outdoor characteristics. It has an open space, so there is a possibility of using it for various purposes. The Foyer space is also surrounded by four sides of the building. On the first floor, you can see the traces of the current level added to the existing building. The windows are hidden in the middle of the storey. The elements of the structure supporting the roof are also attractive. Metal roofs cover the entire Foyer space. The window has a relatively small size compared to the size of the foyer, so the interior space is generally dark. When it rains, the sound is maximized by the metal roof. The walls of this building feature a combination of different kinds of bricks. Also, the irregular textures on the bricks are interesting.
